Quality Study

Nebraska grain sorghum growers take pride in consistently producing an abundance of high quality grain to meet the needs of their customers around the world.  Grain sorghum offers value and versatility for the processing and production of food, feed, and fuel.  It’s high quality worth noting!

The objective of the Sorghum Grain Quality Study, funded by the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board, is to provide information on quality characteristics of Nebraska’s grain sorghum.  The study emphasizes grain sorghum at train loading elevators in Nebraska.  These elevators have the ability to ship grain directly to domestic markets, to export markets, and can ship grain directly to Mexico.

Annually, grain samples are obtained from elevators, utilizing official sampling methods with a probe or a diverter-type sampler.  Lincoln Inspection Service conducts all the grading and is an official grain inspection agency designated by the Federal Grain Inspection Service.  Each sample is tested for all factors under the U.S. Grain Standards Act.  Each location is then tested for the presence of aflatoxin using the Vicam aflatest system.  In 2000, each sample was also analyzed by the Cereal Quality Laboratory at Texas A&M University for protein and starch content.
